Homemade Fish Fingers
with Chips

This fish and chips recipe is especially perfect for a more casual Valentine’s date, but feel free to add a bit extra romantic flair to the meal by making your homemade chips heart-shaped.

  • Ingredients:

    Fish Fingers
    15 ml (1 tbsp.) butter
    1 onion, chopped
    2 garlic cloves, crushed
    400 g cooked hake, flaked
    1 egg
    15 g fresh parsley, chopped

    Crumb Coating
    2 eggs, whisked
    500 ml (2 cups) corn flakes, crushed

    Chips
    4 large potatoes

    Oil for deep-frying

    To complete
    15 ml (1 tbsp.) olive oil
    125 ml (½ cup) tomato sauce

  • Method:

    1. Preheat the oven to 200 °C. Put a wire rack on a baking sheet and grease with nonstick spray.
    2. Fish fingers: Heat the butter and fry the onion and garlic until soft. Set aside. Mix the hake, egg, parsley and onion mixture and shape into fingers.
    3. Crumb coating: Dip one fish finger at a time into the whisked egg then the corn flake crumbs. Arrange on a plate and chill for at least 15 minutes.
    4. Chips: Cut the potatoes into chips. Heat oil for deep-frying until hot and fry the chips in batches until done. Drain on kitchen paper.
    5. To complete: Arrange the fish fingers on the prepared baking sheet, drizzle with the olive oil and bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden.
    6. Serve with the potato chips and tomato sauce.

      Tips and variations:

      Cut the chips in heart shapes with a cookie cutter before frying.
